The first ever March of Dimes Walk in Thomson will be held this Saturday at Thomson High School.
The event is hosted by the Thomson High School Key Club and the Future Business Leaders of America.
"We know it's the same day as the Mayfest, but we still hope people will support our cause," THS Key Club Advisor Christy Donovan said.
Ms. Donovan said the FBLA has been holding small fundraisers for the March of Dimes for several years. Because a Kiwanis Key Club was started at the high school this year and March of Dimes is one of the three organizations sponsored by Key Club, the Thomson High clubs decided to combine their efforts and form the March of Dimes Walk.
Since 1970, the March of Dimes has raised money to help the more than half a million babies that are born prematurely each year. The money supports programs in the local community that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies. It also funds research to find answers to the problems that threaten babies, according to the website.
March of Dimes holds a special place in Mrs. Donovan's heart, because both of her children were born prematurely.
"When I heard about Mrs. Donovan's babies, and heard the idea to do the walk, I said 'Cool, I'll do it,'" said Brooke Vinson, a 10th grade Key Club member.
The event at Thomson High School's track will be from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Mrs. Donovan said concessions will be available.
Anyone wishing to sponsor a walker, participate in the walk, or make a donation, can call the Thomson High School office at 706-98 6-4200. Checks may be made out to Thomson High School with "Key Club March of Dimes" written on the memo line.
