Bucs end season in 3rd place

The baseball season is over for the Briarwood Academy Buccaneers.

The Bucs compiled an overall record of 5-7 and finished third in the Region 1-A standings with a 3-3 record.

Just a couple of weeks ago, the Buccaneers of second-year head coach Kevin Cowart were tied for first place in region competition with Thomas Jefferson Academy and David Emanuel Academy.

Unfortunately, losses to both of those teams pushed the Bucs up against the wall and they were never able to resurface.

A win against DEA's Eagles two weeks ago at the new Briarwood Academy baseball field would have assured the Bucs of at least second place in the region this season.

Season statistics were released by coach Cowart on Monday. They are as follows:

Dalton Reese led the team with base hits. Reese, a sophomore, pounded out 27 hits in 39 at-bats for a blistering batting average of .692. He had 18 singles, eight doubles and one triple. He also scored 12 runs and stole eight bases;

Matt McHatton, a junior, had 15 hits in his first season at Briarwood. He had an impressive batting average of .536. McHatton had 13 singles and two doubles. He scored 10 times and stole three bases;

Adam Hardy went 9-of-19 with the bat for an average of .474. Hardy, a senior, had eight singles and a double. He scored six runs;

Blake Sowell, a junior, had 16 hits in 37 at-bats for an average of .432. Sowell had 14 singles and two triples. He scored 15 runs and had one stolen base;

Colt Phelps went 15-for-35. He ended up with a batting average of .429. Phelps had nine singles, three doubles, two triples and one homerun. He scored 16 runs and five stolen bases;

Matthew McElveen, a senior, went 13-for-33 with a batting average of .394. McElveen had 10 singles and three triples. He scored 15 runs and stole 10 bases;

Will Souther went 4-for-11 for an average of .364. Souther's hits were all singles. He also scored twice;

Spencer Hadden went 11-for-32 for an average of .344. Hadden scored 11 runs and had four stolen bases;

Eric Johnson went 13-for-38 for an average of .342. The senior first baseman hits were all singles. He also scored seven runs and stole two bases;

Steven Parris went 8-for-25 for an average of .320. Parris' hits were all singles. He also scored four runs;

Steven Gunn went 8-for-27 for an average of .296. Gunn had seven singles and one triple. He scored four runs and had one stolen base; and

Jarrett Keen went 1-for-13 for an average of .077. Keen scored three runs and stole two bases this season.

In the pitching department:

Dalton Reese pitched a total of 14.3 innings. He gave up 23 hits, struck out 14, gave up 8 walks for an ERA of 4.90;
