Briarwood girls win state track title

For the third time in Briarwood Academy school history, the varsity girls' track and field team is the Georgia Independent Schools Association Class A State Champions.

Ironically, all three times, longtime Briarwood Academy head coach Clayton Parrish has led those teams to the biggest crown of them all.

"This is real special," coach Parrish said during an interview on Monday. "I'm very proud of our girls. They worked very hard all season and performed at their best when it mattered most. This was a team championship in every since because everyone contributed in one way or another."

Coach Parrish described his team as "great group of girls to work with because they all supported each other. I want to thank all the parents and fans that traveled to Albany and helped us bring home this championship."

The track and field state title was captured at Mills Stadium in Albany, which was held April 29 through May 1.

The Lady Buccaneers compiled a total of 177.50 points. Westwood School was the runners-up with 152.50 points. The team consists of the following student/athletes:

Jessie Talkington, Sara Betts Brunner, Rachel Coxwell, Emily Henderson, Brittini Phelps, Lizzie Keen, Taylor Echols, Shannon Newsome, Kristian Dawson and Marcie Rivers.

Two of their rivals, David Emanuel Academy in Stillmore and Thomas Jefferson Academy in Louisville, placed fourth and fifth in state competition, respectively.

Five track stars at Briarwood Academy tallied more than 20 points. They are:

Emily Henderson -- 31.74 points;

Lizzie Keen -- 31 points;

Shannon Newsome -- 31 points;

Marcie Rivers -- 26.50 points; and

Rachel Coxwell -- 23.75 points.

Other Briarwood Academy Lady Bucs scoring points in the competition included:

Brittini Phelps -- 13.25 points;

Anna Goolsby -- 7.25 points;

Kristian Dawson -- 6.50 points; and

Taylor Echols -- 6 points, respectively.

Event scoring was as follows:

100 -- Meter Dash -- Marcie Rivers, first place in a time of 13.51; and Kristian Dawson, fifth place;

200 -- Meter Dash -- Marcie Rivers, first place in a time of 28.03;

400 -- Meter Dash -- Lizzie Keen, first place in a time of 1:04.70; and Emily Henderson, runner-up;

800 -- Meter Run -- Emily Henderson, first place in a time of2:32.38; and Anna Goolsby, third place;

1600 -- Meter Run -- Emily Henderson, first place in a time of 5:55.59;

3200 -- Meter Run -- Katie Bean, 10th place;

100 -- Meter Hurdles -- Shannon Newsome, first place with a time of 17.16;

300 -- Meter Hurdles -- Shannon Newsome, first place with a time of 50.14, which set a new state record in the preliminary event. In the actual event, Newsome placed second with a time of 50.26;

4 x 100 -- Meter Relay, was won by Briarwood Academy, the team consisting of: Marcie Rivers, Shannon Newsome, Kristian Dawson and Lizzie Keen; The school's second team finished fourth. That team consisted of: Anna Goolsby, Brittini Phelps, Rachel Coxwell and Emily Henderson;

4 x 400 -- Meter Relay was won by Briarwood Academy, the team consisting of: Emily Henderson, Rachel Coxwell, Shannon Newsome and Lizzie Keen in a time of 4:27.62;

High Jump -- Shannon Newsome, second place; and Mackenzie Simpkins, eighth place;

Long Jump -- Rachel Coxwell, first place with a distance of 15-02.50;

Triple Jump -- Lizzie Keen, second place; and Marcie Rivers, fifth place; and

Discus Throw -- Taylor Echols, third place; and Brittini Phelps, fourth place.
