After a dozen years of being one of the nation's top Relay For Life events, the American Cancer Society's Relay in McDuffie County will take 2010 off. But the McDuffie Relay, which has raised more than $2 million since its beginning 12 years ago, is expected to be back in full swing in 2011.
Former Mayor Bob Knox, who has headed up the Relay in McDuffie as a volunteer, made the difficult decision to take a breather this year after 12 years of work to coordinate the event and make it one of the most successful in the country, said Summer Garrison, the Senior Community Manager in Augusta.
"We are very grateful to McDuffie Relay participants and sponsors for their ongoing support, and we look forward to working with them again next year when that Relay resumes," Garrison said. "But we also want to be sure that McDuffie cancer survivors and Relayers who want to participate in a Relay this year are able to find a Relay near them. We encourage them to call or email us so we can direct them to a nearby Relay event." To find a Relay or for more information, call 706-731-9900 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Or you can go to www.garelayforlife.org and click on the Relay map to find a Relay near you.
If you are a cancer survivor and would like to participate in the Survivor Lap of one of the nearby Relay For Life events please contact the American Cancer Society Augusta office at 706-731-9900. Golf carts will be provided for those needing assistance.
Upcoming Relays are: Wilkes County (May 7), Jefferson County (May 7), Augusta, GA (May 14), Taliaferro County (May 21).
