DEARING, Ga. -- A body believed to be that of an elderly man has been recovered from a pond at the McDuffie County Public Fishing Area.
According to emergency workers at the scene, the body was recovered near the bank of one of the facility's seven ponds. A capsized boat had been found earlier.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources is investigating along with the McDuffie County Sheriff's Office and dive and rescue personnel. The coroner arrived at the scene about 9 a.m. today.
The 570-acre fishing area is operated by the state's Wildlife Resources Division and is among the oldest of the state's public fishing areas. Its ponds range from five to 37 acres.
The area is also home to the McDuffie County Environmental Education Center and one of the state's fish hatcheries.
