Authorities probing shooting of Thomson man

THOMSON - Local and state authorities are continuing their investigation into the shooting of a 19-year-old Thomson man late Wednesday.

McDuffie County Sheriff's Department Investigator Larry Adaway identified the victim as Dontavious Dunn, of Washington Place Apartments. Mr. Dunn was shot once in the lower back with what authorities believe was a .9 mm handgun

Mr. Dunn was treated at the scene by personnel with the McDuffie County Emergency Medical Services and firefighters/first responders with the McDuffie County Fire/Rescue Services. He was flown by helicopter to Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta.

His condition was not immediately available.

"I heard about 10 shots," said his mother, Lashunda Dunn, who was inside her apartment at the time of the shooting, shortly after 11 p.m. "It sounded like a bunch of firecrackers."

A short time later, she went outside calling for her son, whom she discovered laying on the ground wounded nearby.

At least one other person also said multiple gunshots were heard.

Multiple gunshots also struck a Ford Taurus in the parking lot of the apartment complex, which is located off Old Washington Road on the outskirts of Thomson.

Although no one had been arrested in connection with the shooting as of this morning, authorities were holding a man for questioning at the McDuffie County Law Enforcement Center.

The shooting is being jointly probed by the McDuffie County Sheriff's Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region 7 Office in Thomson.
