Authorities investigate shooting of 19-year-old

Local and state authorities are continuing their investigation into the shooting of a 19-year-old Thomson man late last Wednesday.

McDuffie County Sheriff's Department Investigator Larry Adaway identified the victim as Dontavious Dunn, of Washington Place Apartments. Mr. Dunn was shot once in the right lower back with what authorities believe was a .9 mm handgun.

Mr. Dunn was treated at the scene by personnel with the McDuffie County Emergency Medical Services and firefighters/first responders with the McDuffie County Fire/Rescue Services. He later was taken by ambulance from the scene to the Thomson-McDuffie Regional Airport where he was flown by helicopter to Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta.

"I heard about 10 shots," said his mother, Lashunda Dunn, who was inside her apartment at the time of the shooting, shortly after 11 p.m. "It sounded like a bunch of firecrackers or a machine gun."

After hearing the noise, Ms. Dunn said she went outside calling for her son. She later learned that he had been shot. Mr. Dunn, a cook at Burger King in Thomson was found lying down on the ground near the apartment where he lived with his mother.

Several other people at the scene also reported having heard numerous gunshots.

At least four gunshots, including one that appeared to have ricocheted, also struck a Ford Taurus car in the parking lot of the apartment complex, located off Old Washington Road on the outskirts of Thomson.

Although no one has been arrested and charged in connection with the shooting at this time, authorities have talked with at least one potential suspect. That man was taken into custody by McDuffie County Sheriff's Department Deputy Sgt. First Class Mike Hobbs in the area of where the crime occurred.

The man was taken to the McDuffie County Law Enforcement Center where he later underwent questioning by authorities.

Investigator Adaway said it still was unclear as to what triggered the shooting.

The crime scene was littered with shell casings from the multiple shots fired. Investigator Adaway requested assistance of Georgia Bureau of Investigation Region 7 Office Crime Scene Specialist Steve Foster to help him in process the scene for evidence.

The shooting jointly is being probed by the McDuffie County Sheriff's Department and the GBI Region 7 Office in Thomson.
