Atlanta man arrested in stolen-check scam

A 42-year-old Atlanta man is one of the latest suspects to be arrested by authorities in connection with trying to cash a stolen check at a local bank.

Thomson Police Department Investigator Lt. Scott Whittle identified the suspect as James Donnell Young, who was taken into custody last Wednesday shortly before 4 p.m.

Mr. Young was charged with one count of forgery in the first degree and one count of theft by taking, Lt. Whittle said.

Following his arrest, Mr. Young was taken to the McDuffie County Law Enforcement Center.

Lt. Whittle said Mr. Young reportedly stole several checks from a Thomson business and attempted to cash one of them in the amount of $550.75 at First Bank on East Hill Street last week.

The investigator said when a bank employee attempted to verify that the check had been drawn on the account of the local business, it was discovered that the check had been stolen.

"It led us to arrest Mr. Young," Lt. Whittle said.
