Medication theft leads to arrest of nurse

A licensed practical nurse at McDuffie Regional Medical Center in Thomson was taken into custody by local and state authorities last Friday in connection with the theft of prescription medication.

Heather Thaxton, of Plum Street, Thomson, was arrested about noon last Friday, according to Thomson Police Department Investigator Lt. Scott Whittle. Ms. Thaxton was charged with three counts of theft of medication by fraudulent means, Lt. Whittle said. The charges are felonies.

The 33-year-old Ms. Thaxton was taken to the McDuffie County Law Enforcement Center, where bond was posted and she was freed later that night.

Lt. Whittle said he and Investigator Jamie Bridges talked with a state drug and narcotics agent along with a hospital representative prior to the arrest being made. The conversation concerned missing medication from the hospital's locked drug dispensary.

An unspecified amount of medication has been taken from the hospital during the past month and a half, Lt. Whittle said. The investigator would not name the type of drugs stolen.

Once the theft was discovered by hospital personnel, it immediately was reported to local and state law enforcement agencies, which led to a two-day probe.
