Thomson man free on bond in assault case

A 21-year-old man recently was arrested by local authorities stemming from an assault.

Thomson Police Department Investigator Capt. Jamie Bridges identified the suspect as Johnny Earvin Lane, Jr., of the 600 block of Adams Avenue, Thomson. Mr. Lane was charged with one count of aggravated battery and jailed in the McDuffie County Law Enforcement Center.

He currently is free on $5,050 bond.

The victim in the case, Johnny Dawson, 45, who also lives on Adams Avenue, told Police Sgt. John James that three men jumped him in late May, records show. Mr. Dawson said his attackers kicked him about the body and punched him in the face.

Mr. Dawson was treated at the scene by personnel with the McDuffie County Emergency Medical Services and firefighters/first responders with Thomson Fire Rescue. He later was taken by ambulance to the Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta, where he was treated and later released.

One of the suspects was identified as Mr. Lane -- a man whose name had surfaced from a previous assault involving Mr. Dawson. That case was looked into by TPD Sgt. Willie Williams.

In an interview with Capt. Bridges, Mr. Dawson said the men -- one of whom he recognized as Mr. Lane and the other two men whom he knew only by their first names -- chased him down and beat him.

The other two men still were being sought as of Monday. Anyone with information about this assault case is asked to contact the Thomson Police Department at 706-595-2166.
