Last week's mystery item from the past is a Sanborn Map of Thomson from May 1930. Sanborn Maps were originally created for assessing fire insurance liability in urban areas of the United States. These maps have been used quite often in research about Thomson by McDuffie Museum Director Jenny Lindsay. The map shows not only the layout of buildings and roads, but identifies what type of business was in each building. Each week, readers can test their knowledge of McDuffie County's past by trying to guess the mystery item in The McDuffie Mirror. For more information on this item, visit the museum on Main Street. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 2-5 p.m. Sunday.
