Bond has been denied for an enlisted Navy man charged with sexually abusing two children at his residence in McDuffie County, authorities say.
Chief Magistrate Judge Bryant Swan on Monday ordered Petty Officer 1st Class Geoffrey Peter Graham, 42, of the 4000 block of Cedar Rock Road, Thomson, be held without bond pending a hearing before a Superior Court judge, according to McDuffie County Sheriff's Department Investigator Al Reeves.
Mr. Graham, who has an E-6 rank, stationed at Fort Gordon near Augusta, was taken into custody last Friday by local authorities. He was charged with one count of aggravated child molestation and one count of child molestation, Investigator Reeves said. The victims are ages 9 and 12.
Judge Swan informed Mr. Graham of the charges against him, making sure he understood them. Graham, not represented by an attorney, was told how he could reach Toombs Judicial Circuit Public Defender Harold Wallace for legal assistance.
Mr. Graham is jailed in the McDuffie County Law Enforcement Center. As of Monday afternoon, a date had not been set for a local Superior Court judge to rule on the possibility of granting bond in the case.
Investigator Reeves said he received assistance from Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Doug Parker of the Region 7 Office in Thomson.
The joint probe by the two law enforcement agencies began on July 26 after the victims' mother reported the alleged crimes to Investigator Reeves. It was learned that the sexual abuse of the children began when the family lived in Guam.
Investigator Reeves said he has worked closely with Navy criminal investigators.
