Two weeks ago the staff of The Mirror and several others put out a special Section titled Mirror Images. This was a section compiled of nothing but good news. As is the case with any media, bad news falls in our lap and we must put forth much more effort to put something out like this.
It started with a lunch meeting with several members of the community in attendance back in April. Those that helped us set a direction for this piece was Mayor Kenneth Usry, Commission Chair Charlie Newton, Stacy Turner, Rusty Lovelace, Andy Knox Jr., Beverly Raburn, Rev. John Barnes, Bonnie Martin and Caroline Richardson.
We had four themes to brainstorm with these folks to put together a good list of story ideas for Neighbors, Recreation, Arts & Entertainment and History. And, boy did they come through.
We had almost 20 'feel good' stories with accompanying pictures along with the support of 35 businesses that helped support this project with their advertising dollars. I feel the Mirror staff (Billy Hobbs, Lynn Davidson, Angela Blair and Janet Wells); along with correspondents Kathy Bennett and Donna Branch did an excellent job for this first ever endeavor. This is over and above what they all do for the regular paper and the many compliments we have received certainly make their efforts very rewarding.
I have done this sort of special for 20 years and I have found the communities really love them. The idea is to dig up the stories that haven't been told or you take an old idea and make it new again.
I want to thank those that were able to make our lunch meeting; without you we could not have accomplished this project. Next year we'll get a different group together and find out what is going on in their world. It will be totally new and bigger and better. If you happened to have missed it we still have copies for sale here at the office.
It is good to see two of the three escaped convicts from Arizona State Prison are now back behind bars.
The search is still on for John McCluskey and his accomplice/cousin/fiancee Casslyn Welch. I guess some lowlifes are just meant to be together.
