Museum Mystery

Last week's Mystery Item From the Past is a prosthetic leg loaned to the McDuffie Museum by Regina Halls-Hall. Ms. Hall's grandfather ran a general store in Wrightsboro that closed in the 1920s. She remembers the wooden leg always being at the store, but does not know who it belonged to. McDuffie Museum Director Jenny Lindsey said she does not know how old the prosthesis is, but noted that it is made with hand-wrought iron and handmade nails. Worn spots on the cuff and bottom of the carved foot suggest it was used by someone. Ms. Lindsey said it could even date back to the Civil War. Each week, The Mirror publishes a mystery item from McDuffie County's history for readers to test their knowledge of history and learn more of their heritage. The McDuffie Museum is open from noon until 5 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday and 2-5 p.m. Sunday.
