Buccaneers are ready to start new season

Beware: The Briarwood Academy Buccaneers just might be ready to pick up where they left off a year ago.

They made it all the way to the Final Four of the Class A Georgia Independent Schools just a few months ago.

In just a short time from now, the Buccaneers of head coach John Osborne will kickoff their 2010 football campaign -- one that promises to be equally as exciting as last year's provided the team stays injury-free.

A week ago, the team looked good in a scrimmage game against WMC of Augusta. Though the score wasn't kept, the Bucs managed to get into the end zone a few times.

And they looked good getting there.

The Bucs were engineered by senior quarterback Blake Sowell, who he indicated that he's ready to lead the Buccaneers back into the GISA playoffs again this season.

"I'm ready to go," Sowell said.

Several other returning players echoed that sentiment.

They included Steven Gunn, Ryan Nelson, Dalton Reese, Ashton Wiley, Ryan Pritchett, Michael Kent and even newcomer Hunter Brinkley, a transfer student from Thomson High School.

Coach Osborne is again blessed with several returning lettermen at key positions.

He and assistant coaches Bo Fleming and Kevin Cowart are looking forward to another season.

This Thursday night, the Briarwood Bucs travel to Sparta to take on the John Milledge Academy Rebels in another scrimmage game.

Next week, The Mirror will take a more in-depth look at the Briarwood Academy Bucs and the expectations that coach Osborne has for this year's team.
