Driver wrecks van trying to avoid deer

A 38-year-old Thomson man lost control of his van and overturned after a deer ran out in front of him on a road in south McDuffie County last week.

Trooper First Class Patrick Prosser of the Georgia State Patrol post in Grovetown identified the man as Dwayne Joseph Colson, of the 3700 block of Chalker Road.

Mr. Colson received minor injuries in the accident, which happened about 6 p.m. on Fort Creek Road.

He was checked at the scene by personnel with the McDuffie County Emergency Medical Services and firefighters/first responders with the McDuffie County Fire/Rescue Services.

Mr. Chalker was rounding a curve in a 1995 Ford Quest when the deer ran out of a wooded area in front of him.

Trooper Prosser said Mr. Chalker traveled 178 feet on the north shoulder and then overcorrected and hit a tree before overturning twice.
