BI-LO collecting food for pets

BI-LO in Thomson has joined its company's other stores to help local pet owners feed their pets. The PAWS Premium promotion began Sept. 1 and runs through Sept. 28 with a goal of collecting 60 tons of pet food. The pet food will be donated to local food banks. Thomson BI-LO Manager Ray Dawson said the food collected in Thomson will go to Manna, Inc.

"And Manna will distribute it to whomever needs it. That way, we know the appropriate persons are getting it," Mr. Dawson said. "We're happy we can help those in the community who need it."

Customers can participate in the promotion by purchasing any random pet supply item and donating it in a "Feed the Love" bin in the front of the store.

Or, they may purchase a prepackaged bag for $5 that contains both canned and dry pet food. Customers who participate by purchasing the $5 pet bag will receive an additional 5 cents in fuelperks! rewards.

The effort is important in these economic times as many food banks face the dual challenge of diminished contributions and an increased number of individuals in need of food, not only for themselves, but for their pets as well.

According to a news release from BI-LO, the company's goal is to help reduce the number of animals being abandoned by their owners or sent to shelters by assisting the families already receiving support from the food banks.
