The Third Annual Thomson Golf Classic, benefiting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Thomson, will be held at Belle Meade Country Club on Friday.
The benefit golf tournament raised more than $10,000 last year to support various youth programs at the local club, according to Charlie Newton, who serves as board president of the Thomson Club.
"This year's Third Annual Thomson Golf Classic promises a great day of golf, dinner and fellowship and will raise much needed money for our Thomson club," said Newton. "We are grateful to all of our sponsors and those who participate in the event."
The presenting sponsor of this year's golf tournament is The Knox Foundation.
In the past two years, a major expansion project occurred at the Thomson Boys & Girls Club. The new addition opened in September 2009, which doubled the size of the facility.
"We're serving more youth there than ever before," said Newton. "That's really great for our community."
Since the club expanded its facility in Thomson, it has experienced a 59 percent increase in the number of boys and girls actively participating in programs there, said Newton, who also serves as chairman of the McDuffie County Board of Commissioners.
Check-in for Friday's golf tourney is at 11:30 a.m. with lunch being served at 12 p.m.
The golf tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. An awards ceremony is scheduled for 5 p.m. with dinner to follow at Belle Meade Country Club.
