Program helps residents buy equipment

The city of Thomson is participating in the Municipal Gas Authority of Georgia's Main Street Energy Efficiency Financing Program, an on-bill financing program designed to improve energy efficiency in the State of Georgia by providing low-cost financing to residential homeowners for the purchase and installation of efficient natural gas equipment.

Funds are available for residential homeowners where natural gas service is available for the purchase and installation of natural gas ENERGY STAR residential appliances -- furnaces, tank-less water heaters, and certain tank water heaters. The City of Thomson Mayor and Council approved the program during the September 9th council meeting. The program will provide Thomson residents access to financing for energy efficient natural gas applications like the popular natural gas tank-less water heater.

The Main Street Energy Efficiency Financing Program is a municipal service for citizens and customers located within the natural gas service areas of municipally-owned natural gas distribution systems.

The program is a product of the American Recovery and Reinvestment (ARRA) Act of 2009 and funds for the program have been made available from the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE) to the State of Georgia, Division of Energy Resources of the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authority (GEFA). GEFA has allocated and will distribute approximately $5.5 million to interested gas and electric utilities for the purpose of establishing or expanding a residential on-bill financing program to promote energy efficiency. The Municipal Gas Authority of Georgia has received $700,000 on behalf of its Georgia Members for the Main Street Energy Efficiency Program.

"The Main Street Energy Efficiency Financing Program allows the citizens of Thomson to now purchase energy-efficient natural gas appliances they may have not been able afford without the option of financing the equipment. We believe a program like this not only benefits our citizens but also supports the efforts of energy efficiency as a whole." said Chuck Cason, Gas Superintendent, City of Thomson.
