Team signs get-well card for Welsh 's wife

Luther Welsh got something he is unaccustomed to getting from football players last Friday night -- a get-well card.

The card wasn't for him, but rather his wife, Anne, who recently underwent lung cancer surgery at University Hospital in Augusta. She was dismissed on Tuesday and is now recuperating at home in Thomson.

"That really meant a lot to me and I know it did her," said coach Welsh after receiving it shortly before the game against the Washington County Golden Hawks in The Brickyard. "It was real special. I think it shows a lot of character on their part to have done this for my wife. I'll never forget it and I'm sure she won't either."

The get-well card, which was signed by all the players on the varsity team, was presented to coach Welsh by junior offensive and defensive lineman Demarco Brown.

The idea was the brainchild of senior running back Brandon Jones.

"It was a real nice idea," said assistant coach Mike Costello.

Luther and Anne Welsh celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary earlier this month.

Anne Welsh recently was featured in The McDuffie Mirror about what life has been like as the wife of the one of the greatest prep football coaches in Georgia history.
