Dearing Mayor Sean Kelley is making a list, and "chickens" is the first item.
At the Dearing Town Council meeting Monday night, Councilman Bobby Aldred said "we've got a problem with chickens running lose in the streets.
"They are getting into other people's yards, and one of them got hit by a car," Mr. Aldred said.
Discussion ensued between the council members and Mayor Kelley, each one naming a yard they knew of that had chickens -- whether the chickens were contained in a pen or running lose.
Mr. Aldred asked Mr. Kelley whether an ordinance could be passed prohibiting farm animals inside the town limits.
The mayor suggested the subject be addressed when the council begins writing zoning regulations.
Councilman Mike McTier suggested making a list of all the issues they want to address in zoning, and post it where they could all see it and add to it if needed.
So, Mayor Kelley wrote "chickens" at the top of a piece of paper, which he said will be kept at town hall.
Mayor Kelley said zoning discussions and writings will begin this coming January and probably will be implemented in 2012.
