Man surrenders after Thomson motel standoff

THOMSON, Ga. - A man believed to be a South Carolina robbery suspect surrendered peacefully this afternoon after a three-hour standoff at a McDuffie County motel, police said.

Mike Ayers, of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, said Harold Randall McDaniels, 40, of Orangeburg, was a suspect in a holdup in that county. A negotiator with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office SWAT team talked him into coming out, Ayers said.

About 25 to 30 law enforcement officers from McDuffie and Richmond counties were at the scene. A handful of customers of the Thomson Scottish Inn have been evacuated, as well as a nearby Arby's restaurant.

The standoff began about 11:30 a.m. when deputies attempted to serve a warrant on McDaniels at the motel.
