THS cross country team is going to state championships

The Thomson High School cross country team has covered so much ground that they've earned a spot in the state championships in Carrollton, Ga., this weekend.

"I am so proud," cross country coach Miranda Murphey said. "I'm more proud of the students that I've coached here than any other students I've coached in any other county before. They work hard, they listen well, just everything you want as a coach, they do. They're a wonderful group."

Coach Murphey said the THS boys' team -- Austin Whitehouse, Ford Adams, Matt Connor, Fisher Yates, Johnny Brinkley, Antoine West and Justin Bettross -- placed third in region competition last Saturday at Blanchard Woods Park in Columbia County.

The girls' team -- Qynesha Williams, Anne Schiffner, Christian Powell, Raven Hamilton, Katlin Braxton, Shelby Williford and Nayeli Monay -- placed fourth in the region competition.

There were 10 teams competing in the AAA region competition. The top four teams from each region qualify for state.

Senior Cullen Wallace is the THS team captain, and Austin Whitehouse is co-captain.

"Cullen did not run on the region team, but he deserves to be recognized for his efforts and leadership," Coach Murphey said.

The first five finishers for each team will be counted for the total team score in state competition.
