Bulldogs bite Warriors early

In what was expected to be a tough matchup, The Thomson Bulldogs went on the road to Grovetown and quickly put away the Warriors 42-14. The win ups their record to 8-1 and they will now travel to face the Burke County Bears for the Region 3-AAA championship Friday night.

After relying on the pass last against Josey, the Bulldogs put the ball back on the ground and ran for 297 yards against the Warriors with 10 Thomson players adding to the total. QB Josh Jones also passed for 97 yards and a TD.

"I thought they would come out and play us better than they did but I guess out kids were just ready to play," said head Coach Luther Welsh.

As they have many times this season Thomson took the opening kickoff. After a pooch kick by the Warriors Thomson took over on their own 48. After a couple of first downs, Thomson faced third down and 16 when Jones hit big Jonathan Atkins for 17 yards to give them a first down at the 9. Two plays later Chris Jordan scored form 8 yards out and Talles Cardosa booted the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 7:00 to go in the first.

Grovetown took over on their own 22 but three plays later were forced to punt after Nic Wood caught Grovetown RB Jamal Cummings in the backfield for a three yard loss. The snap was bobbled and the punt netted just 7 yards.

Demarquiz Lampkin got a couple of yards before Dontavis Brown got as first down after a nine yard run. Jordan took the snap again and got a 13-yard TD run with 6:19 left in the first. The Cardosa kick made it 14:0.

The Warriors next possession was stopped on third down when junior Marquavious Jones had a big hit on Cummings for a loss of one yard and forced the Warriors to punt for the second time of the night.

The punt reached the Thomson 30 and a personal foul on Grovetown took it to the 45. Two plays later Jordan took the ball and raced 48 yards for a score but the play was called back on an illegal motion penalty. That didn't stop the bulldogs though as Jones immediately got 21 yards and Jordan another nine to move the ball deep into Warrior territory. This time it was Shawn Bonner getting the score from 2-yards out with 1:20 left in the first. The Cardosa kick gave the Bulldogs a 21-0 lead.

The Bulldogs' Jones hit on Cummings was the big reason Grovetown was forced to punt with 10:40 left in the half. Thomson took over at the 30.

Torrie Battle had a nice 9-yard run but the Warriors stripped the ball and recovered at the 41. After a couple of plays Grovetown QB Xavier Crain drops back to pass and throws a bomb to the endzone, the ball bounces off of Bulldog Terrance Bradshaw and was intercepted by Ronald Jackson and the bulldogs took over at the one.

Thomson managed a first down and were forced to punt and the Bulldogs then had Grovetown in a fourth and 8 situation. Crain rolled out right looking to pass and Bonner caught him from behind and Thomson took over. Several plays later Jones hit Atkins for a 16-yard TD pass with the Cardosa kick giving the bulldogs a 28-0 lead going into halftime.

The onslaught continued in the third quarter with Jordan scoring his third TD of the night on a 30-yard run and Jones coring from 15-yards out.

Then it got ugly with the frustration showing for the Warriors. Play was stopped for short period after several flags were thrown at the same time. After which, Thomson called a timeout and the entire team huddled as the coached calmed the players down.
