For the second year in a row, the Briarwood Academy Buccaneers find themselves in quest of a football state championship.
This Friday night, the Buccaneers of head coach John Osborne host Randolph Southern in the first round of the Georgia Independent Schools Association Class A state playoffs. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
"It's great to still be playing football this time of the year," remarked coach Osborne during an interview on Monday night. "We hope we can come out and play four real good quarters of football against Randolph Southern and ultimately win the game. That's what we're going to be attempting to do."
The Buccaneers got off to shaky start this season. They lost their first three games to Class AA football teams before reeling off six straight wins over Region 1-A opponents.
Their long winning streak ended when they fell 42-0 at the hands of the Memorial Day School Blue Thunder last Saturday night in Garden City.
For the past two weeks, the Buccaneers have played without the services of senior quarterback Blake Sowell, who recently sprained his left ankle.
Backup quarterback Taylor Coxwell, a sophomore, has had to step up and play that all-important position and did not do a bad job considering he has had limited time learning the position.
Coach Osborne said he expects Sowell to be back in the saddle when the Buccaneers take on Randolph Southern on Friday night.
"The doctor said he needed to stay off that foot and that's the reason we kept him out of the games the last two weeks," said coach Osborne. "We're counting on him in a big way this week."
