I was elated just a few short weeks ago to see the addition of the scarecrows in downtown Thomson. I would like to express my gratitude to each and every merchant who chose to participate in this community activity. It gave us a reason to go downtown. In fact, the sidewalks were bursting at the seams in the afternoons and on into the night. It encouraged us to spend time with our families. Not only did it affect the folks here in Thomson, it generated talk in other places as well, including The Augusta Chronicle.
I walked the route up Main Street earlier, not long after the decorations were put up, but many more we added after that. I had plans to tour them one more time but I was waiting on the time change so there would still be plenty of daylight when we got out of church Sunday night. I was saddened yesterday afternoon when I rode through town and realized that many of the displays had already been taken down. When I expressed my grief to one of our local business persons this morning, I was told that the Thomson City Council had mandated that the streets be swept clean by Friday, November 5. What would it hurt to leave them up a little longer until maybe the week of Thanksgiving?
