Running club prepares for Depot Dash race

The Thomson Family Y has a running club. When the club began in June of 2009, it consisted of only five members. But, today there are 24. Runners of all ages and abilities are encouraged to come and enjoy the thrill of this outdoor exercise opportunity. Fall, with the crisp, cool weather and beautiful scenery, is the perfect time to enjoy this activity.

Two of the club's members, Barry Bennett and Eric Keller, have made impressive showings in races during the past year. During the summer, both of these men participated in Jekyll Island's three race series, and each placed first in his age group.

In October, Barry and Eric ran in the Augusta Half Marathon. From a field of 800 runners, Eric placed 57th and Barry finished 58th. Both men currently are training for the Snickers Marathon, which will be held in Albany, Georgia on March 15, 2011. This race is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon, the most prestigious marathon in the world. Both Barry and Eric hope to qualify for the Boston Marathon in March.

Currently, members of the running club are preparing for the Depot Dash, which is held in conjunction with Thomson's Festival Off Main activities. The club is responsible for planning and marking the course for the 5K race, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 4. The race begins at 8:30 a.m., with a kids' quarter mile run beginning at 9:45 a.m. Everyone needs to make plans to come and participate either by running in one of the races, or by cheering for those who are running. To register for the race, go to or visit the Thomson-McDuffie Chamber of Commerce Festival website.

The running club will take its winter break beginning Dec. 16. The club will resume its activities in March of 2011. Hopefully, there will be a number of eager participants, both veteran and new comers willing to participate.
