Although it wasn't easy, the Briarwood Academy Lady Buccaneers defeated the visiting Thomas Jefferson Academy Lady Jaguars 38-31 in basketball action Dec. 7.
Despite the win over a rival school, Briarwood Academy head coach Clayton Parrish expressed disappointment with the way his team performed offensively.
"I wasn't too happy with our play on offense," coach Parrish said.
"We're a much better team offensively than what we showed. We've got to improve on our half-court execution."
The Lady Buccaneers were spearheaded to victory by senior point guard Maria Celeste-Johnson, who scored 20 points.
Without Johnson, the outcome likely would have been a loss.
"She played real good, I thought," coach Parrish said. "She shot the ball well from the outside and was 6-of-6 from the free-throw line."
Two other players, Emily Henderson, a senior, and Tiffany Pate, a sophomore, played well, too. Henderson bucketed 7 points, and Pate tossed in 6 points to round out the top scorers.
The Lady Buccaneers played Edmund Burke Academy on Monday night. A story about that game and their game against Gatewood Academy this Friday night will be included next week.
