Grocery shoppers on the south side of Thomson will soon think they have a new store, although it'll be in an old building.
The Thomson IGA on West Hill Street is being remodeled, according to Assistant Store Manager Jesse Lewis.
Not only will the store have new meat and produce cases, ceilings, lights, floors and office, but it will also have a bakery/deli with a dine-in area.
"It'll be something nice, and we're real excited," Mr. Lewis said. "We are trying to give back to the public and show them we are glad they shop here."
The bakery will offer decorated cakes and other fresh-baked products.
The deli will open at 7 a.m. daily for breakfast and will serve hot meals until 7 p.m.
The remodeled floor plan means the store can offer a bigger variety of products.
Cigarettes will be sold from the cash register area to cut down on the length of time all customers have to stand in line. Older shoppers will have assistance getting their groceries into their cars. Mr. Lewis said additional baggers will be hired.
"We will be helping the elderly more," the veteran manager said. "We've been weak in that area. But we definitely are going to work on that."
Applications are being accepted for baggers and bakery/deli staff, Mr. Lewis said.
The store will maintain its regular hours, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, during the remodeling, which is expected to be complete in early spring.
Thomson IGA is owned by FloCo Foods.
