YOUTH EMPOWERMENT RALLY

WHERE: Thomson High School

WHEN: Jan. 15-16

FOR MORE INFO: "It Takes a Village" is designed to encourage and expose youth to positive life skills. This is a collaborative of community members and will include live performances, fun activities for children and workshops aimed at providing youth the skills they need to succeed in life. It is our responsibility to ensure that we take the initiative to bring children out of the streets. The success of this rally will depend on unity as a community. CAP AND GOWN ORDERS AT THS

WHERE: Thomson High School

WHEN: Jan. 20 -- all three lunch periods

FOR MORE INFO: Balfour representatives will be on hand to take orders for caps and gowns. The $65 graduation fee includes cap, gown, tassel, diploma, diploma cover and printing charges.

GRAND OPENING RECEPTION

WHERE: MAC on Main Art Gallery

WHEN: 5-8 p.m. Feb. 12

FOR MORE INFO: To be held at the new gallery on Main Street. Please bring friends and come see the beautiful building the Camellia Partners and Bracton and Sheryl Ivey renovated. The gallery will be filled with original artwork by local artists, and refreshments will be served.

GHSWT TO BE ADMINISTERED

WHERE: Thomson High School

WHEN: 9 a.m. Feb. 23

FOR MORE INFO: This is a retest opportunity to administer the Georgia High School Writing Test for candidates for May and May 2012 graduations. It is the final administration before the May 2011 commencement. Passing the GHSWT and all parts of the Georgia High School Graduation Tests is required to earn a diploma in Georgia and to participate in graduation exercises in McDuffie. Per state testing rules, no cell phones, PDAs or other electronic devices are permitted in testing rooms. Former students must register to take this test by calling (706) 986-4222 no later than Feb. 4.

MOTHER'S MORNING OUT

WHERE: Thomson Family YMCA

WHEN: 8:30-11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday

FOR MORE INFO: Take the morning to go shopping, hang out with friends or just relax alone. Open to ages 6 months to 12 years. Cost is $15 per child. Discount for additional siblings. ONE STOP MAY BE ABLE TO HELP YOU

WHERE: East Central Georgia Consortium One Stop

WHEN: Now

FOR MORE INFO: More than 25,000 jobs will be opening for the heavy construction industry throughout the state. An experienced construction laborer can earn $20 per hour. You may qualify to be trained for these jobs. If you are unemployed, willing to travel and Georgia Work Ready Certified, contact the local One Stop for more information at (706) 595-8941. The One Stop has placed more than 45 people in jobs related to this industry after training.

AFTERSCHOOL TUTORING FOR THS STUDENTS

WHERE: Thomson High

WHEN: 3:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays

FOR MORE INFO: For math, students may see Mrs. Costello in Room 209; for English, Mrs. Flanders in Room 111; for social studies, Mrs. Hubert in Room 405; and for science, Mrs. Pereda in Room 304. There is no charge to the student for this supplemental educational service. Call the THS guidance department at (706) 986-4222.

McDUFFIE COUNTY EVENING SCHOOL CREDIT RECOVERY

WHERE: Thomson High

WHEN: 3:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays

FOR MORE INFO: This option is for Thomson High School students who have failed a required course for graduation. All courses are computer-based, self-paced and aligned with the Georgia Performance Standards. The cost for each course is $50 per half unit attempted, and students may register in the guidance office. A student is not permitted to leave early unless a parent or guardian comes to sign him or her out. Call the guidance department at (706) 986-4222.
