Mr. Richard Allen Pannell Jr.,
THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. Richard Allen Pannell Jr., 78, of Thomson
died on January 14, 2011, after a brief illness.
Mr. Pannell was born on May 25, 1932, to the late Richard Allen
Pannell, Sr. and Adele Kellum Pannell in Wrightsboro, and was a
lifelong resident of McDuffie County.
Mr. Pannell answered the call of duty and proudly served his
country in the Korean War. Although he earned his Juris Doctor, he
was an entrepreneur in spirit and heart. A successful businessman,
builder and real estate developer, Mr. Pannell was also an avid pilot
and a keen collector and restorer of vintage automobiles. Mr. Pannell
was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of
Thomson, and a member of the JOY Sunday School Class. He served
on the Board of Directors of the McDuffie County Hospital for many
years.
A devoted family man, survived by his wife of 58 years, Annette
Montgomery Pannell, his daughter and son-in-law, Paula P.
Scarborough (Eugene) of Camden, SC.; his son and daughter-inlaw,
Richard Allen Pannell III (Victoria) of Marietta.; Lauren P.
True (William) of Hilton Head Island SC.; and three grandchildren,
Allison and Lindsay Pannell, and Adam True. He is also survived by
his brother and sister in law, Robert D. Pannell (Joyce) of Atlanta,
two sisters and their husbands, Catherine Williamson (Walter),
Atlanta; and Ruth Cole (Malcolm), Forsyth, GA.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 18, at 11 a.m. in
the First United Methodist Church in Thomson with the Rev. John
F. Barnes, IV and the Rev. Beverly Casstevens officiating. Burial
immediately followed the memorial service at Westview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First
United Methodist Church, P.O. box 8, Thomson, GA., 30824, or to
the Hilton Head Humane Assoc. P.O. 21790, Hilton Head Island,
SC., 29925.
