Lady Bucs get lopsided region win

Briarwood Academy freshman Tiffany Pate scored 10 points to lead the Lady Buccaneers to a 45-21 victory over the visiting Central Fellowship Christian Academy Lady Lancers Saturday afternoon at Briarwood.

"Overall, I thought we played a pretty good game," Briarwood Academy head coach Clayton Parrish said after his team's lopsided GISA Region 1-AA win. "We played excellent defense."

It marked the second consecutive region win for the Lady Bucs in as many games. On Friday night they defeated Piedmont Academy 34-30.

Scoring did not come as easy in that game as it did against Central Fellowship.

Maria-Celeste Johnson, a senior, led the scoring attack in the game against Piedmont with 12 points. Two other teammates also played an outstanding game. Rachel Coxwell scored 7 points, and Morgan Reese tossed in 4.

Other recent Briarwood Academy games saw the Lady Bucs wallop Monsignor Donovan Catholic High School in Athens on Jan. 18. The final score was 45-16.

Emily Henderson, a senior and a recent WJBF-TV Scholar Athlete of the Week, led the Lady Buccaneers with 12 points in that win. Johnson scored 10, and Pate tossed in 7 points.

Briarwood Academy picked up two other recent wins. It defeated Brentwood Academy of Sandersville 33-31 on Jan. 13 and handed Windsor Academy a 45-23 loss on Jan. 14.

In the game against Brentwood, Johnson scored 9 points, and Coxwell scored 8.

Even though the Lady Bucs won the game, coach Parrish was not pleased with his team's performance from the free-throw line. Briarwood made only 4 of 26 free throws.

"Poor outside shooting also hurt us in that game," coach Parrish said.

Briarwood's Coxwell led her team with 13 points in the Windsor win. Johnson added 10 and Reese 8 points in that game.

"We played really well defensively," coach Parrish said. "The team really stepped it up in their play in the third quarter."

During that eight-minute span, the Lady Bucs outscored their opponents, 18-2.

In the game against Central Fellowship, the Lady Buccaneers wasted no time establishing a big lead. They jumped out to a 14-5 lead behind three 3-point baskets from Johnson. Those 9 points were all she would score in the game, but it set the pace.

Coxwell, who scored 6 points against Central Fellowship, hit a 3-point basket at the buzzer that gave the Lady Bucs a commanding 19-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

With 4:46 left in second-quarter action, Briarwood's Shannon Newsome hit a pair of free throws that made the score 25-7.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Buccaneers built up as much as a 32-point lead, 45-13 with 2:59 left in the game.

Pate scored 10 points to lead her team to victory. Johnson scored 9 points, Maggie Keene, 8; Coxwell, 6; Henderson, 6; Newsome, 5; and Ashlyn Dent, 1 point.

Briarwood Academy was scheduled to have played Brentwood Academy in Sandersville on Tuesday night of this week. They also play two weekend games -- the first one against Covenant Academy on the road Friday night and Windsor Academy on Saturday. Complete coverage of those games will be included in a story in next week's edition.
