A 32-year-old Thomson man is being held without bond on sex-related charges reportedly involving a teenage girl.
Thomson police Sgt. Marcus Murray identified the suspect as Benjamin Lee Smith, of the 600 block of North Lee Street.
Charges against Mr. Smith, who was taken into custody at his workplace by Warren County sheriff's Deputy Joey Smith and Thomson police Officer Pat Sanders, include one count of child molestation and one count of aggravated child molestation, Sgt. Murray said.
He remained jailed Monday night, more than a week after his arrest on the felony charges.
Sgt. Murray said the case still is under investigation by him and Thomson police Capt. Jamie Bridges.
The case unfolded on Saturday, Jan. 15, when Thomson police Officer Ruth Hernandez received a call from fellow Officer Don Hilson shortly before 10:30 p.m. to respond to the emergency room of McDuffie Regional Hospital in Thomson in reference to a teenage girl reportedly telling police that she had been molested.
The girl named the alleged offender, Sgt. Murray said.
"She said she had had sex three nights before she reported the crimes," Sgt. Murray said in an interview with The McDuffie Mirror .
Police say Mr. Smith has denied doing anything criminal involving the girl.
