A 20-year-old Thomson man was arrested last week for being in the possession of alcoholic beverages and for lying to police.
Joe Winfrey, Jr., of the 1800 block of Ridgeview Drive, was jailed on charges of possession of alcohol by a person under the age of 21 and for giving a false name to a law enforcement officer, according to a report filed by Officer Keith Smith of the Thomson Police Department.
After Mr. Winfrey's arrest, he was jailed in the McDuffie County Law Enforcement Center.
He was taken into custody after a traffic stop of a Ford Expedition that was driven by a woman. Officer Smith stopped the SUV shortly after 2 a.m. on Jan. 17 at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Street and Ellington Avenue, police records show.
"While speaking to the driver, I detected a strong odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage," Officer Smith said in his report.
