House Resolution 102 honors Luther Welsh

State Rep. Sistie Hudson, D-Sparta, of the 124th House District, introduced House Resolution 102 honoring retired Thomson High School football coach Luther Welsh. The resolution was approved by the House in Atlanta. The text of the resolution is below:

Recognizing and commending Coach Luther Welsh; and for other purposes.

WHEREAS, Coach Luther Welsh has long been recognized for his superior coaching skills, his dedication to challenging the future leaders of Georgia, and his incredible devotion to his players; and

WHEREAS, Coach Welsh retired from coaching football and serving as the Thomson High School athletic director at the conclusion of the 2010 season; and

WHEREAS, his coaching career spanned an incredible 54 years, serving as a head coach for 43 years and an assistant coach for 11 teams in both Georgia and South Carolina; and

WHEREAS, Coach Welsh amassed a winning record of 323 victories, 162 losses, and five ties, to earn an amazing winning percentage of .663; and

WHEREAS, he coached five state championship teams, three of which were at Thomson High School, and captured 14 regional titles; and

WHEREAS, Coach Welsh won a coveted 300th victory while serving as head coach at Thomson in 2002, the same year he led the Bulldogs to win the Class AAAA State Championship title; and

WHEREAS, during his final, 2010 season, Coach Welsh won his 100th home field victory in front of his adoring fans and former players; and

WHEREAS, there are thousands of men who learned many valuable and lasting life principles through the example set by Coach Welsh; and

WHEREAS, he brought out the superior athletic ability of his players and served as a role model and mentor to his teams; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his contributions to the students in this state, it is abundantly fitting and proper for this body to honor the extraordinary commitment and accomplishments of this outstanding individual.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of this body recognize Coach Luther Welsh for his decades of service to the future leaders of this state and commend his commitment to the student-athletes of Georgia.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the House of Representatives is authorized and directed to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to Coach Luther Welsh.
