The Lady Buccaneers of Briarwood have backed themselves into the state playoffs after suffering two close losses. The first loss was against Brentwood Academy, and for the third time this season the game was decided by one point, with the Lady Eagles taking this one 33-32.
It was a close game throughout as the Lady Buccaneers trailed by 2 at the end of the first quarter and by one point at the end of each quarter thereafter. They went up by 4 in the fourth after scoring 6 straight points, only to let the Lady Eagles back in the game.
Briarwood was just 6 of 31 from the field in the second half and hit just 2 of 9 free throws in the fourth quarter.
"We were two evenly matched teams, but we didn't hit the shots when we needed to, and it cost us the game," said head coach Clayton Parrish.
Emily Henderson led the Lady Bucs with 9 points, Tiffany Pater had 8, and Maria-Celeste Johnson put in 7.
On Friday night the Lady Bucs faced Covenant Academy, played a good second half but came up short, 44-47. Briarwood trailed 25-18 at the half.
"We played a poor first half, but we had a good talk during the break and they responded well," said Parrish.
The Lady Bucs outscored Covenant 11-5 to get within a point at 30-29. A strong 17-point fourth quarter by Covenant sealed the win. Maria-Celeste Johnson led Briarwood with 19 points, and Tiffany Pate scored 4.
The No. 4 seed Lady Buccaneers were scheduled to play No. 1 seed Frederica on Wednesday at 7 p.m. With a win they would play again at 7 p.m. Friday against either LaGrange or Fullington. The games are being played at Georgia Middle College. For scores go to www.mcduffiemirror.com.
