Dear Thomson Community,
We would like to thank you for making Coach Luther Welsh Day on Feb. 6 at Thomson Depot a memorable day that our family will never forget. The heartfelt proclamations from Georgia state Rep. Helen "Sistie" Hudson, the city of Thomson and McDuffie County will be displayed in our home showing our gratitude to the Thomson community.
We would like to extend our appreciation to all who came out to support this event. To those of you who organized and worked so hard for this event to be a success, we thank you dearly. We will certainly enjoy the golf cart we were given. Anne has already said she will drive it to and from the mailbox at our house in South Carolina. We appreciate the many years of support under the Friday night lights as well as the meals prepared for us and the prayers during our sicknesses. An example of this being a great community is the fact that many of you have volutnteered your time to take me to my cancer treatments. We have been blessed to have lived in Thomson, where there are such caring people. Football season will never be the same for our family. Football has always been a big part of our lives, and it still will be, but in a different way.
The 54 years of coaching have been rewarding, but the coaches, players, administrators, fans and friends have made it extraordinary. The losing seasons were tough, but you have to know how to lose to truly appreciate being a winner -- on and off the field.
We wish Coach Milan Turner and his coaching staff the best. We know he will be supported by the Thomson community as he takes over reins in The Brickyard.
Thanks, Thomson, for the great memories and for an awesome retirement celebration.
May God bless each of you.
Luther Welsh and the Welsh family
