Tennis team gets region wins

The Thomson High School tennis team won its third match in regional play on Feb. 24, defeating Grovetown.

"Today's match went great," said Thomson head coach Kristen Garrett. "I think everyone went out there today and gave 100 percent, and we won."

So far this year the boys' team has won two matches and lost one in regional play, and the girls' team has won all three of its regional matches.

"Jessica Taylor played good today. She's always great to watch," said coach Garrett. "I don't think she's decided which school she's going to when she graduates, but she'll probably have a full scholarship wherever she goes. She's an amazing player to watch. Josh Williford won his singles match today. He's our best boy, and he might end up playing at Georgia Southern."

It's the hard work of the players that has gotten the team where it is this season, the coach said.

"I'm new to this area, so I'm not really sure how the other schools are," coach Garrett said, "but so far I think we have a chance of even making it to the state playoffs. It seems like tennis isn't taken very seriously here, so we've had to work very hard to get money to get the supplies, have more serious practices and get ready for these matches, and I think already you can see a difference this year from last year."

BritnieAnne Campbell is undefeated in region play this year and won her match against Grovetown 8-6.

"I feel like I played fairly well today," she said. "I got nearly all of my serves in."

Williford was also happy with the way he played against Grovetown.

"I played pretty good today," he said. "I won 8-0, so today was a good day. For the season so far we are 2 and 1 in our region and 3 and 2 overall, so we'll just have to see how it goes. This is a new region for us, and I don't think we've really faced our main competition this year.

"It's still early in the season, but we're starting off good and hopefully will end up good."

Williford, who began playing when he was 15 after switching from baseball, said he enjoys the competition in tennis.

"You're playing someone different all the time; it's always changing," he said.

The Thomson Tennis Dogs' next regional game is against Josey on March 3 at the courts next to the high school.

The 2011 Thomson Tennis Dogs are: Williford, Andrew Hyman, Ben McIntosh, Alan Fowler, Josh Myers and Peter Pin on the boys' team and Taylor, Campbell, Ciera Crippen, Shelby Williford, Anne Schiffner, Jasmine Turman, Shan Williams, Jakaylia Brinkley and Nayeli Monay on the girls team.
