Mr. John Garner Brooks
THOMSON, Ga. - Mr. John Garner Brooks, 93, son of the late
Lemuel Reese Brooks and Annie Thigpen Brooks, died Thursday, March
10, 2011.
Memorial Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 12,
in the Dearing Baptist Church, with its pastor Dr. Michael Timmerman
and Brandon Wilde Chaplain Mike Riddle officiating. A private family
interment was held prior to the funeral service.
Mr. Brooks was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Helen Gay
Brooks, and by his five brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Anne and Dan
Hahn of Dearing; Yvonne and John Evans of Montgomery, AL; one
son, John Brooks, Jr. Burlington, NC; daughter-in-law Sonja Brooks,
Atlantic Beach, NC. He is also survived by his sister Joyce Hughes, and
sister-in-law Mary Brooks, both of Thomson; five grandchildren Sarah
Hahn, Daniel Hahn, Miriam Hahn, Irene Jasper, and Cynthia Dix; three
great-grandchildren Jordan Dix, Savannah Dix, and Alex Jasper; and a
host of beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Brooks was born in Stapleton, GA, in 1917, but spent most of
his adult life in McDuffie County. Mr. Brooks was general manager
of Culpepper Lumber Company in Thomson, for 30 years until his
retirement in 1989. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club
of Thomson, and a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. He
served on the Thomson- McDuffie Hospital Board. He was a member
of Dearing Baptist Church and had served many years as a Deacon and
Sunday School teacher. He served as pastor of the Friendship Baptist
Church in Gibson, GA for several years. Mr. Brooks' personality and
desire to serve were treasured by numerous loyal friends.
The family of Mr. Brooks extends gratitude to the staff of Brandon
Wilde, and to numerous others who have loved and cared for him over
the years.
Pallbearers were Harold Eubank, Jackie Brooks, Lem Brooks, Jimmy
Brooks, Tommy Brooks, and John Evans. Honorary pallbearers were
the deacons, and members of the Mens Sunday School Class at Dearing
Baptist Church.
