Campaign opens Family Y programs to those in need

For the past five weeks, the staff, board, participants and volunteers of the local Family Y and Y130 have helped raise funds for the Family Y Community Support Campaign.

The goal for 2011 for the Thomson Family Y branch was $49,000, up from $38,500 last year, and the Y raised more than $55,000.

Donations to the Community Support Campaign provide senior memberships and give children and families in need the opportunity to join the Y and participate in its programs.

Every penny raised stays in McDuffie and Warren counties.

The local Family Y's activities for children include gymnastics, ballet, tap and jazz, karate classes, art classes, day camp and swim lessons during the summer, and flag football. This year the Y plans to offer a cheerleading camp and specialty camps that include golf and tennis. All activities are at the Y130 Branch on Main Street in Thomson.

This year Kathy Usry served as the 2011 campaign chairwoman. The campaign is continuing to accept donations. The campaign held a number of fundraising activities, including a decorated chair auction at the Y, a hot dog sale at Y130, several raffles for Christmas decorations and baskets of goodies. In fundraising nights at chain restaurants a portion of the sales went to the campaign.

Banners placed in the Hill Street Y main exercise room will show the businesses and donors who pledged $250 or more for this campaign.
