The Briarwood Academy boys varsity track team placed seventh overall at the state track meet this weekend in Albany, Ga. Coach Jason Osborne said he was very pleased with the efforts of the team.
Senior Steven Gunn placed fourth in the discus, earning 5 points for Briarwood.
Briarwood's 4x100M relay team placed fourth. It was their best time of the year. The relay team consisted of juniors Michael Kent, Dalton Reese, Ryan Pritchett, and sophomore Taylor Coxwell. Coxwell also placed fourth in the high jump, earning 4.5 points for Briarwood. Junior Michael Kent placed third in the 100-meter dash, earning 6 points.
"I was very proud and excited of freshman Dylan Wright for running his best time of the year; he took 3 seconds off his time in the 300-meter hurdles and earned the seventh-place spot." Osborne said this is quite an accomplishment for a freshman to have a chance to run at state.
Briarwood had two athletes place in the pole vault -- senior Matt McHatton and junior Jacob Patterson. McHatton placed fourth and Patterson won first in state, earning 10 points for Briarwood.
Osborne said that Patterson had been working since February from about 3 to 5:30 each afternoon; he did not take time off on the weekends or the holidays. He was on a mission to earn a state title at the pole vault.
