Utilities still working to restore power

About 600 Georgia Power customers in Thomson remained without power as of 3:20 this afternoon, company spokeswoman Carol Boatright said.

She said that some customers in the eastern part of the state, mostly in Augusta, might not be back up until Friday afternoon or evening.

Steve Chalker of Jefferson Energy Cooperative said Wednesday night that 9,500 customers in McDuffie, Richmond, Columbia and Burke counties were without power, but he did not have a specific number for McDuffie.

William Irwin, the cooperative's manager of marketing, said that at 3:15 p.m. today about 3,500 of those customers remained without power. He said two main circuits at a substation in the Berzelia community were still out of service.

"We have out-of-town crews coming in to assist our crews," he said, adding, however, that he could not say when power would be restored to those 3,500 customers.
