Former firefighter is indicted

A former volunteer Thomson firefighter has been indicted on theft charges.

David Hawkins, of the 800 block of Cobbham Road, was indicted by a McDuffie County grand jury June 13 on one count of theft by taking. Hawkins was arrested Aug. 30 by Thomson police.

Hawkins had served as a volunteer firefighter since 1977 and as an assistant fire chief since 1991.

He was accused of taking items from the Sears store in Thomson, where he worked part time.

The items, which were valued at about $5,000, were stolen over a period time, authorities said.

The grand jury also indicted three men in the December robbery and shooting death of a Thomson man.

Jatheus D'Mario Bennett of Dearing, Calvin Curtis of Harlem and Dexter Jones of Augusta are charged with malice murder, felony murder, armed robbery, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during commission of a felony.

Police said Kenneth James "Kenny" Johnson, of Greenbrier Road, was shot not far from his home shortly before 10 p.m. Dec. 19. He died early the next day at Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta.

Also indicted was Gregory Louis Morris of Maxeys, Ga., who is charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Police said the body of Pate Morris, a 79-year-old musician and farmer and Gregory Morris' uncle, was found in the driveway of his home in the 500 block of White Oak Campground Road on Nov. 16.

Pate Morris had been shot several times, authorities said.
