Superintendent sees progress in CRCT scores

McDuffie County School Superintendent Jim LeBrun said today that he is generally pleased with the system's scores on the Criterion-Referenced Compentency Tests, or CRCT.

Although McDuffie scores were below the state average in each category, some were very close to that benchmark. In reading, for example, 90.5 percent of McDuffie County third-graders passed. The state average was 90.9 percent. In eighth-grade reading, 95 percent of McDuffie students passed. The state average was 96 percent.

The biggest gaps were in fifth-grade math, where 75.3 percent of McDuffie students passed, compared with the state average of 86.6 percent, and fifth-grade reading, where 85.1 percent locally passed, against a state average of 90.5 percent.

But LeBrun cautioned against reading too much into the scores from year to year because each year's tests compare different students.

"We look at what our students do from year to year," he said.

He also noted that the scores represent "a snapshot of a given day."

LeBrun pointed to progress at the middle school and at Dearing Elementary School, both of which met Annual Yearly Progress this year after missing last year.

"Actually I'm particluarly pleased with our scores at the middle school," where eighth-grade math results rose 9 pecentage points.

He also said the high school could make AYP, depending on how "six or seven students" do in summer school.

Meeting or exceeding the state average remains a goal, LeBrun said.

"It's always a goal to be higher than the state average across the board," he said.

"It's up and down. "We always strive to do better."
