CRCT shows higher scores on reading and English

Individual schools' test scores released last week by the McDuffie County school system show generally good scores on reading and English/language arts but lower results on math, science and social studies.

County school Superintendent Jim LeBrun said when the district's scores on the Criterion Referenced Compentency Tests were released last month that he was generally pleased with the scores.

He said then that he was especially gratified by the results from Thomson-McDuffie Middle School, which made Annual Yearly Progress after missing the benchmark last year.

Ninety-five percent of eighth-graders at the middle school met or exceeded standards on reading and English/language arts. On mathematics, 76 percent met or exceeded standards. On science, the figure was 60 percent, and on social studies it was 74 percent.

Dearing Elementary School also made AYP for the most recent school year. There third-graders performed best, with 95 percent meeting or exceeding the standard on reading and 93 percent meeting or exceeding it on English/language arts. The figures were 86 percent for mathematics and 88 percent for science and social studies.

Dr. Mychele Rhodes, the director of curriculum and instruction, said the system does not have test-retake results from the high school graduation exam, so it does not know yet if the high school made AYP.
