Ms. Lavada Downs Wiley

STATESBORO, Ga. - Ms. Lavada Downs Wiley, age 85, passed away early Tuesday, July 12, at Southern Manor Retirement Inn under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. Mrs. Wiley was born April 19, 1926, in Savannah Gia. She lived her childhood years in Hinesville, Ga., with her beloved older sister, Naomi Simmons. There she met her husband, Lonnie Elbert Wiley, at a USO function at Fort Stewart during World War II. They married in 1946 and moved to Thomson, which was his home. She was active in her church, First Presbyterian of Thomson, as a choir member and president of the Women of the Church. She was also active in the garden club and volunteer organizations. She worked at Knox Homes, was assistant clerk of court in McDuffie County and court reporter for the Toombs Judicial Circuit. After the death of her husband she moved to Mount Pleasant, S.C., and helped her sister in the florist business for many years. She also worked as an administrative assistant at Roper Hospital in Charleston, S.C. where she retired. She was a wonderful cook, seamstress, and a loving, caring, giving person who cherished her family and friends. She was a wonderful mother to her four daughters. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Elbert Wiley; parents, Ulysses Payne and Emma Turner Downs; a daughter, Kathryn V. Wiley; two brothers, Herbert Downs and Larry Austin Downs of Savannah, and a sister; Naomi Downs Simmons of Hinesville, Ga. Survivors include her daughters, Betty Wiley (George W.) Wickham of Statesboro, Cherry Wiley (Dr. Alan) MacTaggart of Greenwood, S.C., and Tracie Wiley Scott of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; sisters, Eula Marie (John) all of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Ruthie Downs Lynch of Midway, Ga.; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Wiley Johnson of Thomson; brother-in-law, John Thomas Wiley of Thomson; six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held on Friday at 3 p.m. in Mt. Pleasant S.C. at Christ The King First Assembly of God. A graveside service and burial was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2011, in the Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens in Thomson. We would like to offer a very special thanks to the wonderful staff at Southern Manor Retirement Inn and to the entire caring group at Ogeechee Area Hospice.
