Barnett, Starling launch radio show about sports

Two men who have attended about every Thomson High School varsity football game for the past two decades now will comment on Thomson sports every Thursday night.

Retired coach John Barnett and banker Ralph Starling will present Sports Talk With Coach and Ralph from 8 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays, beginning tonight, on WTHO, 101.7-FM.

Listeners can pose their questions and offer their insights by calling (706) 595-9846.

Starling and Barnett also will discuss college ball, and other local school sports.

Barnett was an assistant football coach at Thomson for 23 years. He is in his second year as "a full-time, stay-at-home dad." He also writes a weekly column for The McDuffie Mirror.

"I just thought it would be a lot of fun to try a talk show that would discuss high school sports locally, not just Thomson, but all over the immediate area, and maybe get people talking about their favorite college teams," Barnett said.

"We'll do a little prognosticating and just kind of have fun with it," he said.

Barnett has some experience in the broadcast booth, but this is his first stint as a regular host.

"We used to have a show called The Two Old 'Dawgs that Ralph and Jerry Randolph did, and I would do a guest spot on that," Barnett said.

Starling says it has been 58 years since he saw his first Thomson football game, at age 6.

He left town for college and the service, but hasn't missed many games since his return.
