McDuffie students may qualify for free tutoring

The McDuffie County School District wants to inform parents and guardians of Norris Elementary and Thomson-McDuffie Middle School students of available educational services.

The Georgia Department of Education, Norris Elementary and Thomson-McDuffie Middle School are working to provide programs to help all students succeed. These efforts include implementing the Elementary and Secondary Education Assistance Act of 1965. This law supports parent(s)/legal guardian(s) and schools working together to raise student achievement.

As part of the efforts to improve student achievement and implement ESEA, a child might be eligible to receive Supplemental Educational Services, which is free tutoring provided by state-approved providers. Only parents and legal guardians of students who qualify may request SES. If the school district does not have sufficient funds to provide services to all eligible children, priority will be given to those eligible children with the lowest test scores in reading/ English language arts, or math on the CRCT. Eligibility for students who do not have a spring 2011 CRCT reading/English language arts and mathematics score will be determined by the student's performance on the Universal Screener in Reading/English Language Arts and Mathematics administered at the beginning of the 2011-12 school year.

If you are interested in SES, please complete the Request for Services Form at Norris Elementary or Thomson-McDuffie Middle School. Each child is allotted $1,240.00 for tutoring. A list of GaDOE State approved providers will also be available at your child's school or district Web site or by accessing the GaDOE Web site:

Contact Dr. Mychele Rhodes at (706) 86-4027. There are several providers to choose from; please ask questions to ensure you make an informed decision.

The school must receive SES forms by Sept. 19.
