Briarwood prevails in battle of defense

Provided to The McDuffie Mirror

The Briarwood Academy Middle School football team improved to 2-0 with an 8-0 victory over Edmund Burke Academy.

The game was a good old defense battle. Both teams played hard and left nothing on the field. The Spartans would take the opening kickoff and drive down to the Bucs' 15-yard line only to be turned away as they would turn the ball over on downs. This would be a recurring theme in the Sept. 1 game.

On the Bucs' first possession, they would get one first down before being faced with a fourth and 4 on their own 33 yard line. The Bucs would pull a fake punt as punter Dakota Reese made a perfect throw and Tripp Harper picked up 17 yards on the play. The Bucs' drive would stall at the Spartan 20 yard line.

Edmund Burke would again drive all the way down to the Bucs' 8 yard line with only 1:15 seconds left in the half. On the next play Dakota Reese would intercept a Spartan pass and the Bucs would able to run out the clock to make the score 0-0 at halftime.

The Bucs would receive great field position to start the second half as a failed on-side kick gave the Bucs the ball at the Spartan 45 yard line. Five plays later, Dakota Reese would score on a 25-yard run up the right sideline. He also ran in the 2-point conversion to make the score 8-0 with 5:35 left in the third. The Bucs would then turn the Spartans away as they stopped them at the Bucs' 7 yard line with only 4:30 left on the clock.

The Bucs failed to run the clock out and were forced to give the ball to the Spartans again with 45 seconds left on the Spartan 35 yard line. Two plays later Ty Gunter intercepted a Spartan pass to preserve a Briarwood Victory.

"Defensively you could not have asked for a better effort," coach Bo Bleming said. "We were getting 11 people to the ball on every play. It was a total team effort. I could not be prouder of our team. We found a way to put one in the end zone and stop them when it counted. Ty Gunter made a great play to close out the game as he intercepted the Spartan pass on their last drive."

The Bucs will again be on the road this week as they travel to Siloam to play the Nathanael Greene Patriots at 6 p.m.
