The Briarwood Academy Middle School football team improved to 3-0 with a 48-14 victory over Nathanael Greene Academy on Thursday night.
"I was proud of our effort our boys gave," Coach Bo Fleming said. "My older kids took care of business and let a lot of younger kids get valuable experience. We got to come to practice next week and get ready for a tough Thomas Jefferson team."
The Bucs would receive the opening kickoff and score three plays later on a Dakota Reese 5-yard TD run. Reese's 2-point run was good, to make it 8-0 at 6:01 in the first quarter.
On the Patriots' first possession, Mason Kent caused and recovered a fumble, setting the Bucs up at the 45-yard line. Three plays later, Tripp Harper would score from seven yards out and Davis Newton added the 2-point run to make it 16-0, with 3:15 left in first. The Bucs would force a punt by the Patriots and score on their first play from scrimmage.
Quarterback Davis Newton ran up the left sideline for a 34-yard TD run. Will James ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 24-0 with 1:15 left in first. The Bucs would again force a Patriot punt. Jeb Blount had a 35-yard return to set the Bucs up first-and-goal at the Patriot 10-yard line. On the next play, Reese would score from 10 yards out. The 2-point run attempt failed, making it 30-0 with 6:36 left in second. The Patriots would get on the board on a 45-yard TD run and add a 2-point run to make it 30-8 with 2:09 left in second.
On the Bucs' first possession of the third quarter, they would score on four plays, with Harper scoring on a 12-yard TD run. The 2-point play attempt failed, making it 36-8 with 4:39 left in third.
The Bucs would score again on a 7-yard TD run by sixth-grader Jesse Cushman. The 2- point play failed and with 5:10 left in fourth, the score was 42-8. The Patriots would score on their next possession on a 48-yard TD run, but the 2-point play failed. The score then stood at 42-14 with 4:24 left in the game. The Bucs would score again on the last play, as sixth-grader Dylan Reese stripped a Patriot runner of the ball and raced 45 yards for a touchdown.The final score was 48-14.
The Bucs will travel to Louisville at 6 tonight to face the Thomas Jefferson Jaguars.
